People are lamenting about it being a sham, that it’s a passing fad and in a bubble and everything will go to shit. Just look at these Reddit comments.
At a rough price of 3.2K ETH, aforementioned invisible rock JPEG (technically really a .PNG) sold for $12,800. I’d argue that’s a fair price.
It’s exhaustingly ironic since I pointed out before how people ascribed value to Bitcoin and dismissed Dogecoin’s value because of the same impression of a veneer. That same veneer-grasping cuts both ways; it empowers the entity with cultural transmissibility (spreading) while its mold tends to lead people to treat it as mere laughing stock (dismissing). These two are abstracted concepts about the function of cryptos, whether fungible or not.
But Art is more than veneer. Art is meaning making through its expression. Sometimes the Art is more than the sum of its LITERAL parts. In our invisible rock specimen, the Art was more the point it elucidated and the reactions it elicited. The emotions that were evoked were the Art: both the sense of courage the buyer felt when engaging in his derring-do and the way thousands of netizens reacted in mocking…
